Lesson 1(Part Six):The importance of the BIG PICTURE…

One of the most important part of designing your own house is figuring out the direction you need to take, the details can be obtained later in the process… , but knowing the general direction you want to achieve makes all the difference. It is a well known concept that is used by all the succesfull people , they draw the general line that is defined by their  objectives then they establish the steps for achieving the objectives, so if you take on the big task on designing your dream home you must divide your goal in little baby steps and after doing 2 or 3 baby steps you need to take a break from the detail perspective and look backward on what you have done and figure out if there is any significant improvement that needs to be done and also look forward to the steps you need to take further but also take some timeto  wonder if the steps are rightly put on your order of priorities(in terms of obtaining the purpose they are designed for in terms of time,  cost and efficiency),because sometimes some steps can be deleted for they do not aime for the final result anymore and possibly other steps are needed… .
One example of the result that can be achieved for such a systematic thinking is  the house called the PRISPA project(the first house designed by Romanian students, ever to qualify for Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 (SDE 2012)-the competition’s purpose is to design and build a fully solar home, which can be assembled within the space of 10 days. Their main concept is developed around a space called prispa that is designed like  a hybrid space where you feel comfortable, shaded and safe, but where during winter, you can still get a tan so that space is not completely inside or completely outside.

Their approach is to have it hidden, efficient and low maintenance. In order to achieve this, they grouped most of the HVAC systems in the technical room and storage space (only the interior air-air converters being placed on the walls).
The position of these areas helped us as much when it came to maximizing the efficiency of the kitchen and bathroom plumbing (straight pipes, proximity of water tanks). The photovoltaic system is mounted on the roof metallic boards using a simple technology while also having its energy converters in the technical area.
